First let’s delve into the term “disruptor”, and what I mean when I refer to it on this blog; according to Wikipedia: (In business) a disruptive innovation is an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market-leading firms, products, and alliances. Here’s your chance to EMBRACE the DISRUPTION!

So now that you know where I’m coming from, let’s continue with how this is truly, what I believe, the perfect opportunity to reboot-refresh-refocus and set yourself apart from the rest.

What are “disruptors” doing differently?

They are leveraging Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Social Media (to name a few), and as a result, claim they will make for a more streamlined and cost-effective solution for the client… In some cases, they are not even “designated” real estate professionals, but rather are “licensed” hourly employees working from a volume-numbers-game approach.

My two-cents…

I say avoid fighting the inevitable, and even embrace our ever-evolving industry that makes it for an exciting time to be a part of. The point is to not focus on these would be competitors, but rather focus on the Value Proposition you already offer your clients. These “disruptors” are forcing the industry to evolve, and to articulate what makes you special… And that’s not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.

So, what does make you special??

See how I did that, it should get you thinking about it seriously… And trust me when I say, that they have every script and dialogue in the book to combat your traditional approach… so get to changing.

I also think embracing the transformation of our industry will get you out of the fear-based narrative of they’re taking something from you… Truth be told, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone… Everyone that is prepared and has the right mindset that is. So, get moving on that specialty designation you’ve been putting off, learn your scripts and dialogues, have a Value Proposition, and be the Professional you already are or can become! Emphasizing service, skill and a true caring of what is in your client’s best interest will certainly set you apart!

The obvious difference you already possess is your “Emotional Intelligence”, of which I assure you cannot be artificially taught. Also, remember that you too can get up to speed with technology, AI, and social media; plus add a sprinkle of your awesome “EI”, and you will be unstoppable!

So, what’s my message…

  • Embrace and learn the new ways, but don’t become over reliant on them.
  • Hold your clients hand, literally and figuratively.
  • Keep reminding your valued clients that you exist, and that you are “Emotionally Intelligent” and are not a robot.
  • Offer them a Unique Value Proposition that shows how you are Special.
  • Show you understand the emotional impact of their decision, and that you care.
  • Know your stats and theirs too.
  • Know your scripts, because they do.
  • Have a service 1st heart and work hard for them!!

Professional Agents that are in business every day and care, adapt, and even embrace the new world, will set themselves apart from whatever this new world throws at them! There is a match of clients for each one of you! Service may not be a new term, but it’s one you should always keep in your tool belt!
